COUNTERFEIT $50 notes are circulating in the Frankston, Carrum Downs and Seaford areas. Acting Sgt Natalie Dollard, of Frankston Police, said the fake notes were discovered at shops in Bayside Shopping Centre.

"We've had a number of reported incidents since June 23,'' Sgt Dollard said.

"Notes have also been found at a number of service stations and convenience stores in Carrum Downs, Seaford and in Chelsea, Moorabbin and the Mornington Peninsula.

"There appears to be quite a few circulating and we ask that the public be wary of them,'' Sgt Dollard said.

Although the notes did have a very good likeness to real $50 notes, the differences were noticeable.

"The feel of them is not what a legitimate note feels like, they feel more like paper,'' she said.

Anyone who may find a counterfeit $50 note is urged to contact Frankston Crime Investigation Unit on 9784 5555 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
