1800 NO HOON

MEDIA RELEASE
For immediate release: 17 October 2005

Frankston residents can now phone 1800 NO HOON, (1800 66 4666) 24 hours a day, seven days a week to report anti-social driving behaviour.

Frankston City Council's Community Safety Co-ordinator Philippa O'Halloran said the "Hoon Hotline" demonstrates the Council's strong commitment to road safety and partnership with Victoria Police.

"The 'Hoon Hotline' hopefully will be an effective tool in reducing the incidence of anti-social driving behaviour," she said.

Anti-social driving behaviour is the driving or behaviour of motorists that has an impact on people's feelings of safety and wellbeing. It is a social problem occuring throughout Melbourne and in many instances constitutes illegal behaviour. "Anti-social driving includes excessive speeding, revving engines, screeching brakes, skidding, fand manoeuvres called 'fishtails' and 'doughnuts' and leaving oil on the road or causing damage to the road," Mrs O'Halloran added.

If anti-social driving behaviour requires immediate police attention residents should phone 000. If the driver has moved on, or the activity has ceased, residents are urged to phone Frankston City Council's "Hoon Hotline" to report the activity. All calls to the Hoon Hotline are confidential. Details of the caller and the "hoon" behaviour will be recorded and the information will be passed to Victoria Police to help identify potential hot spots used for irresponsible driving.

Frankston City Council's "Hoon Hotline" is a freecall 1800 number, although calls from mobile phones may incur charges. "The aim of the service is to assist Council and the Police to identify offenders and to identify locations where 'hoon' activity is occurring," said Mrs O'Halloran.

To celebrate the launch of the "Hoon Hotline" Council is asking residents to nominate someone they believe would qualify as a safe driver. Send the details of the responsible driver and a description in 25 words or less on why you feel they are a safe driver to: Responsible Driver Competition, Frankston City Council, PO Box 490, Frankston, 3199. The winner of the Responsible Driver Competition will be rewarded at the launch on 8 November.

The "Hoon Hotline" will be officially launched in the town square in Wells Street. Residents are invited to take part in a range of activities for families and responsible drivers. For further information about the "Hoon Hotline", the launch, or the Responsible Driver Competition visit http://www.frankston.vic.gov.au or phone 9784 1886.
