Living arrangements in caravan parks, residential parks and rooming houses are set to come under the spotlight as part of the Victorian Government’s review of rental laws.
Director of Consumer Affairs Victoria Simon Cohen today called upon residents and operators to have their say on the sixth and final issues paper in the review of the Residential Tenancies Act 1997, which considers alternate forms of tenure.
“These unique living arrangements pose special challenges, including navigating shared use of facilities such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundries, adhering to rules of conduct, and living in close quarters with others,” Mr Cohen said.
“For operators, balancing the needs of individual residents and the best interests of the park or rooming house community as a whole can also be a tough task.”
In addition to community living issues, matters up for consideration in the issues paper include:
- the types of agreements rooming house operators and residents can enter into
- what happens when a caravan or residential park is sold or closed down
- when caravan park occupants should be covered by the Residential Tenancies Act
- new and emerging models of shared living, and how these should be regulated
- issues around the upkeep and appearance of dwellings in caravan and residential parks.
“We want to know how the law can help make life easier for residents and operators who are navigating the challenges in these continually evolving housing markets,” he said.
Details about how you can have your say are available at the Fairer Safer Housing website.
