Kananook Creek Indigenous Botanic Garden

Postby Noel Tudball » Sat Jun 12, 2021 3:23 pm

Kananook Creek Indigenous Botanic Garden (formerly known as Arboretum)

The plan was approved by FCC, Melbourne Water and the Seaford community in 1997 and was previously known as an arboretum (tree museum).

This project is now at risk/faces a remake:
  • It has been approved and announced by FCC on several occasions, but just hasn't got underway
  • It is a walking track
  • Areas have been destroyed during level crossing removal work, e.g. near Seaford RSL
Have your Say. Closing date for feedback has actually passed, but may well be received until the FCC meeting when they make a decision.

With thanks to collaborations with Rob Thurley, Past President, KCA (Kananook Creek Association).

SCC strongly supports the building of the Arboretum == approved in 1997 == by Frankston City Council and Melbourne Water and the Seaford community.

=================
KCA's Seaford Arboretum:
- is a Tree Museum
- is to be located in the area between Station St and Seaford Rd (the Master Plan covers the area from the Mile Bridge to Eel Race Rd)
- will be a learning experience to understand our local indigenous reserve
- will rekindle the enthusiasm of Seaford residents
- will become a tourist attraction
……… and much more!

=================

  • All locally indigenous native vegetation destroyed during LXRA level crossing removal/shared bike path installation will need to be replanted
  • The issue is not just environmental but it’s also about the preferred user experience
  • Council's preferred policy as per the existing Master Plan, is to physically separate the unique bush walking experience from the concrete bike road needed for cyclists
  • Council’s official policy had been to route the bike road entirely along the rail reserve and this enjoyed majority support from both walkers and bikers. Why change this popular policy?

Beckwith Gve bridge was to have been part of it, but is now not being replaced by FCC.  Refer: http://www.seafordcc.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=193

"Seaford was appalled at the damage to the proposed Arboretum Site and the
compromises this created. The vision to be implemented should be that of
Dr Jill Orr Young for creating magical public spaces. KCA does not support a compromised
hybrid vision with the appointment of Rush Wright (from LXRP)."

    Information from a Kananook Creek Association member:

    Council is currently proposing to water-down the vision for the heart of Seaford from an Indigenous Botanic Garden to just another “Garden”.

    This is a site in the heart of Seaford and the Seaford community should not accept this downgrade - Seaford deserves gardens of similar status as Botanic Gardens. The community capital expended by Seaford in the last three decades in the restoration of the Kananook Creek Corridor Nature Reserves should be shown due respect - surely the Seaford Community has earned this Botanic Garden recognition.

    The 1992 Kananook Creek Management Plan recommended an Arboretum for the old Caravan Site opposite the Beckwith Grove Bridge for outdoor environment education.

    1997 Landscape Architect Dr Jill Orr-Young prepared the Kananook Creek Landscape Master Plan from Eel Race to the Mile Bridge and produced a Concept Plan as the accepted vision for the site.

    This vision in the Concept Plan conveys something more than an “arboretum” and a more suitable name might be found in the future - consideration could be given to the site as an indigenous annexe of the Frankston Botanic Gardens.

    This opportunity for an Indigenous Botanic Garden in the heart of Seaford, fully funded by State Government as part of the Level Crossing Removal Project is probably a one in one hundred years one.

    The Seaford Community should take this opportunity now - a second rate outcome is just not acceptable.

    We are hoping to have a public meeting of interested citizens when pandemic restrictions permit.
